The Bowdoin College Museum of Art is proud to announce an important addition to its collection of ancient sculpture. A bronze figure (bronzetto) from ancient Sardinia was acquired in June 2004 from an auction held by Sotheby’s in New York.

Lot 57 is a fine Sardinian bronze figure of a warrior that is dated circa 9th/7th Century B.C. The 7-inch high figure has an estimate of $50,000 to $80,000.
It failed to sell. (è andato invenduto!)

Lot 247, Figure of a Warrior, bronze, Sardinian, circa 9th/7th Century B.C., 6 1/4 inches high  
Lot 247 is an excellent Sardinian bronze figure of a warrior that is dated circa 9th/7th Century B.C. The 6 1/4-inch-high figure has his right hand raised in what the catalogue states is a "prayerful gesture," and holds a bow on his left shoulder with a quiver of his back. He is wearing sandals and has a square breastplate hand from his shoulders and is wearing a crested helmet with a large plume. The figure has great dimensionality and character and an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000. It sold for $27,000. (è stato venduto per 27.000 dollari)

Condition: Very good condition, except missing left leg above the knee. Beautiful original surface with and green brownish patina.
Description :
This superb Sardinian bronze figurine represents an archer, standing, pulling back his bowstring to shoot an arrow. Worked in attenuated form, standing with his head turned sharply to his left and right and pulling back his bowstring to let loose an arrow, and wearing a tunic with short sleeves, rectangular pouch on the chest, and crested and horned helmet, a large quiver of arrows on his back, the face with grooved mouth, beaked nose, and deeply grooved and notched eyebrows.   This bronze figure is a beautiful example from the typology of the Sardinian bronzes and sculptures of the Iron Age.
