I Lovin’ Spoonful sono una band Pop Rock degli anni ‘60 [Steve Boone, bassista, Joe Butler batterista vocalista, John Sebastian, il leader del gruppo (fino al 1968), Zal Yanovsky, chitarrista (fino al 1967) ] sono stati famosi per “Summer in the City”, che fu anche al primo posto nella classifica, ma produssero anche molte altre canzoni belle ed interessanti, tra cui “Do you believe in Magic”, “Daydream”, “You didn’t have to be so nice”, “Lovin’you”, “Nashville Cats”, “Six o’Clock”.

Trassero il loro nome (“La Cucchiaiata Amorevole”), dal verso dalla canzone “Coffe Blues” del cantante Country-Blues Mississippi John Hurt , una delle loro fonti d’ispirazione insieme a Chuck Berry.

Erano una Jug Band e pertanto adottavano anche strumenti arrangiati da sé (Jug sta per quel boccione vuoto sulla cui imboccatura si soffia, per ottenerne un suono), come il Kazoo (che deriva dal pettine coperto di carta stagnola), oppure la macchina da scrivere, o altro materiale tradizionalmente riciclato.

Ora la Band esiste ancora, ma non è più la stessa. Nelle parole di John Hurt, direi che non è più “My lovin’ spoonful, two or three times as good as any other brand”.
